If your workload is increasing and you are feeling stressed, here are five simple tips for dealing with workplace stress.

Five Stress-Relieving Strategies

1 – Locate the Problem in a Situation

When we perceive a situation as difficult, we perceive it as a threat, and our bodies respond by increasing our stress. When we view the same situation as a challenge, we feel more in control of the situation, which reduces stress.

2 – Spend 3 minutes brainstorming a stressful issue. If possible, do this with a coworker.

Make a list of every possible solution to the problem. Include any ideas you have – don’t edit what you write. You might end up with the original solution or result. By doing so, we improve our ability to break free from habitual thought patterns. This aids in stress reduction.

3 – Avoid using negative language.

When we are stressed, we tend to see the world in a more negative light. Changing our language to use softer words can make any situation seem less intimidating. ‘I can’t do this,’ replace with ‘How can I do this?’ ‘Replace ‘I hate doing this’ with ‘I don’t enjoy doing this.’ Discuss the situation with someone and plan small steps to tackle what may appear daunting.

4- Concentrate on your breathing for 2 minutes.

Stop whatever you’re doing. Sit or remain motionless. Concentrate on your breath as it enters your nostrils. Take a slow, deep breath in and slowly exhale. Repeat 5 times. Return to your previous task.

5 – An open door for a manager should be a revolving door.

Managers must be proactive and communicate with their employees on a regular basis. This will assist them in identifying and dealing with employee stress early on, as well as identifying if unreasonable demands are being made on staff unintentionally. Encourage team members to take a lunch break and get out of the office. Managers who are proactive make it easier for employees to come to them if they need to discuss any issues that are causing them stress.
