Strategies for ensuring your child’s cyber safety

The internet provides an opportunity for children to interact and learn on a global scale and can be a wonderful learning tool. However, the internet also offers strangers a direct link to your home and your child’s life. The danger of this cannot be underestimated. It is imperative, that you educate yourself and your family about the potential risks of the internet, and know what to do when faced with these challenges.

Setting rules for usage and regular supervision to ensure the rules are followed

  • Make it clear to your child that they are not to share their home address with anyone over the internet.
  • Make a list of these websites so that you and your child know which ones they can visit.
  • Set time limits and find age-appropriate sites for your child to visit.
  • Encourage your child to use a non-gender-specific anonymous online name.
  • Place the computer in a family area where you can see what your child is doing.
  • Teach your child not to open unsolicited emails or messages.
  • Encourage your child to communicate with you if they come across any inappropriate or disturbing content that makes them feel unsafe. They may watch pornography, horror, or extreme violence, for example.
  • Avoid using headphones for private conversations.
  • If you allow your child to use these Apps, be his or her friend on social media sites.
  • Discuss online strangers with your child. Children must understand that strangers on the internet are not always who they claim to be.
